Dermal Fillers

Dermal filler consists of a gel-like substance (Hyaluronic Acid) which is injected under the skin to help smooth out lines and wrinkles and restore lost volume.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance in the body.

It retains moisture in the skin, keeping it hydrated and giving it a smooth and healthy appearance. However, the amount of HA in our skin diminishes as we age.

By our mid to late 20’s our collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid production starts to decline. Fine lines and wrinkles start to appear and by age 40 these lines deepen. We begin to notice loose and sagging skin (jowls) along our jawline and hollowness under our eyes and cheeks.

Dermal fillers can be used on many areas of the face to enhance, contour and restore lost volume. They are not permanent, so will need to be repeated at 6, 12 or 18 months, depending on the area treated and type of filler used.

They produce very natural results and often contain a numbing agent to help make the treatment more comfortable.

There are many brands of dermal filler but we only use FDA approved brands such as Restylane, Juvederm, Teoxane, Aliaxin and Belotero.

The lips, cheeks, tear trough, chin, jawline, nasolabial folds, marionette lines and upper lip lines can be treated.

Lips tend to be a popular treatment as filler can enhance the shape of thin lips and add hydration. We aim to deliver natural looking results with subtle enhancements.

Tear troughs are an area under the eyes which can appear hollow and dark. Filler can improve the contour in this area and make the skin appear brighter. Not everyone, however, is suitable for this treatment and this will be assessed at your consultation.

Cheeks are an area that loses a lot of volume due to downward movement of the fat pads underneath them. By restoring this loss of volume it gives the cheeks greater definition and lift which can also improve the lower face, especially the nasolabial folds.

Nasolabial folds are the lines that deepen from your nose to the corner of your mouth. Filler is very effective at reducing the depth of these lines.

Upper lip lines can be reduced by placing a small amount of filler. Other treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections and skinboosters may also be used to achieve the best result.

Marionette lines can cause a ‘sad’ appearance and down-turning mouth due to a lack of support around the mouth. Filler smooths out these hollows and lifts the corners of the mouth to give a more youthful appearance.

Chin and Jawline are often treated together to improve a persons facial profile or to balance aspects of their face.

Prices for filler treatments start at €320. If you are having additional mls of filler on the day, these will be discounted.

Patients who are suitable candidates are those who are in good health and do not have any underlying conditions which could affect their healing capacity. It is helpful if you do not smoke and do not have aging skin issues which may require surgical correction instead. Typically, patients who seek dermal fillers have noticed some hollowness in their face and more lines starting to appear. You are not suitable for filler treatment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or allergic to any of the components of the dermal filler, such as lidocaine. Always inform your practitioner of your full medical history.
Topical anaesthetic can be applied and dental injections can be administered which are particularly beneficial for lip filler treatment. The filler itself often contains local anaesthetic.

The numbing cream is not always necessary for filler treatments, especially if being treated with a micro-cannula, as this is a more comfortable way of placing dermal filler. However, when treating lips, it is advisable to use some form of numbing agent, whether it’s a topical cream or localised dental injections to numb the lips.

Depending on the type of filler used it can last for 6, 12 or 24 months. Lip filler tends to break down after 6 months whereas cheek filler can last from 12 to 24 months.

With all injectable treatments there is a risk of bruising, swelling and redness. Lips can swell and remain swollen for up to 2 weeks. Bruising can appear as a pinpoint or can be larger and may take up to 2 weeks to resolve also. Makeup and concealer can be used to camouflage it. By following the pre-op instructions and advice this can help to reduce the likelihood of bruising.

It is important to consider the timing of your appointment if you have an important event coming up or a holiday planned.

Filler needs time to settle and allow any bruising to heal.

It is better to schedule your appointment 4 weeks beforehand so that any potential complications from heat and sun exposure do not occur.

As with anti-wrinkle injections the following advice is recommended:

Avoid Alcohol 24 hours prior to treatment

Supplements such as Vitamin E, Ginkgo Biloba, Ginseng, St. John’s Wort and Omega 3 Fish oils have a blood thinning effect and can increase the risk of bruising and swelling after injections. Avoid these for 7-10 days before treatment.

Aspirin, Ibuprofen and other NSAIDS have a blood thinning effect and may increase the risk of bruising. These medications should NOT be stopped without consulting your doctor.

Stop applying Retinoids 2 days before and 2 days after treatment.

Rebook your appointment if you have a rash, cold, blemish or infection in the area to be treated.

If you have a history of cold sores please let us know in advance as anti-viral medication may be recommended prior to treatment.

  • You can return to work and resume your usual activities afterward.
  • Avoid touching or rubbing the treated area.
  • Do not apply makeup until the following day.
  • Avoid exercise for 48 hours.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours following treatment to minimise the risk of bruising.
  • Avoid other skin treatments, such as facials, for 2 weeks post-treatment.
  • Stay out of the sun, saunas, tanning beds, and hot tubs for 48 hours afterward.
  • Wear SPF and a sunhat if you are outside.

The areas treated may feel tender for the first 48 hours; they may also feel lumpy and look uneven. This will improve over the next 2-3 weeks as the swelling subsides and the filler settles.

It is important to contact us if you develop any pain, blanching of the skin, or unusual bruises in the area. We will provide you with our contact details.

A thorough consultation, including a full medical history, is required firstly to determine your suitability for the treatment. A facial assessment is carried out to draw up a tailored treatment plan to help achieve your desired outcomes. The treatment begins by cleansing the skin thoroughly, then applying numbing cream if needed. Dermal and lip fillers can be placed using needles or cannulas, or both.

The time taken to inject the filler is usually 20 to 30 minutes. Post-op instructions and contact details are then given to the patient.

Results from dermal fillers are instant but take 3-4 weeks to fully settle, as the area treated can initially become swollen. Swelling starts to settle after 24-48 hours and will have subsided within a few days.

Yes, the filler is made up of hyaluronic acid, which is dissolvable. There is an enzyme called hyaluronidase which is used to remove the hyaluronic acid filler if necessary.
